The Foundation for Salem Public Education is an independent non-profit organization, founded in 1994, that awards grants annually in support of creative teaching in Salem's public schools. The foundation works to enhance the quality of public education in the city of Salem, Massachusetts by raising funds to support pilot programs, special projects, and the purchase of needed educational materials and equipment. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded over 679 grants to Salem teachers and their students totalling almost $300,000 in support of projects in art, literacy, drama, technology and music. Foundation funding comes from the proceeds of our annual Spring Auction and donations from the Salem community. To quote Dr. Herb Levine, former Superintendent of Salem Schools: "The Foundation for Salem Public Education has stood tall as a partner in the pursuit of excellence for our public schools. The contribution of fiscal resources, although extraordinarily important, is matched by the enthusiasm to spread the word that the Salem Public Schools are second to none and the Salem's public school children are as fine a group as anywhere in Massachusetts. The efforts of organizations like the Salem Foundation for Public Education pay off in many different ways, including contributing to the creative spirit of our very talented faculty and a climate of sharing and caring beyond the walls of the public school building." Our Mission The Foundation for Salem Public Education, Inc. is a non-profit organization which provides funding for projects which further students' educational experiences in science, mathematics, the arts and humanities. Such projects go beyond the scope of those funded by the Salem School Department. The Foundation works with the business community, local museums, the National Park Service, Salem State College, and the larger community to make schools a true community enterprise. The Foundation also promotes and coordinates other kinds of community volunteerism and participation in the schools. The Foundation has an interest in funding projects which help students develop their talents according to their needs and interests, become lifelong learners, effective citizens and create an environment in which to pursue and achieve excellence.
